Le Piane Winemaker Dinner
One of the great joys of Italian wine is its diversity. Hidden in the long shadows of the internationally-renowned appellations of Brunello and Barolo are literally hundreds of tiny production zones, each with its own tumultuous past, iconoclastic characters, and unique, little-known wines.
Located at the northernmost extremity of Piemonte, Boca was a well-established wine-growing area as far back as the 16th Century. It persisted as a benchmark zone of Nebbiolo-based wines until the late 19th and early 20th Centuries when Barolo and Barbaresco began their rapid ascent. The subsequent decades have been less kind until very recently. The forests encroached upon many of the other vineyards, reducing the total acreage under the vine to less than twenty. Only one producer remained in the area: Antonio Cerri. And his wines never left a 5km radius.
Then, in the late 1980s, a Swiss importer named Christoph Künzli arrived and became immediately fascinated with the zone. He spent years working with Cerri, eventually purchasing his vineyards in 1995. Since then, Künzli has worked tirelessly to rehabilitate this historic region and expose wine drinkers to these beguiling, elegant expressions of Nebbiolo (or Spanna, as it is locally known).
Please join us on May 18th as we welcome Christoph to the Osteria for what is sure to be a special and very informative evening. We’ll be tasting several of his wines along with a five-course, Piemontese-inspired menu from Executive Chef Liz Hong. Space is extremely limited, so reserve your spot soon!
